Back a few months ago, Apple developed a dedicated iTunes U app available on the iOS App Store, and it looks like the company is going to do the same for its podcasts in iOS 6, which are currently downloadable via iTunes. Earlier this week, it was noted that the iTunes U, Podcasts, and Audiobooks sections were removed from the iOS 6 build currently available to developers. Now, according to a report from AllThingsD, Apple will soon be launching a standalone podcast app for iOS 6.

So why have podcasts disappeared from the new version of iTunes that Apple started showing to developers this week?

Because Apple plans on giving the recordings their own bit of digital turf.

People familiar with Apple’s plans tell me that when its new iOS 6 software becomes widely available this fall, podcasts will have their own app, where users will be able to discover, download and play them on mobile devices. Users who access iTunes via laptop and desktop machines will still find them in that version of iTunes, though.

This will help podcasts gain greater visibility and hopefully increase the number of downloads that they get. The iTunes app is already highly overcomplicated, with the large number of categories of media to choose and download from. Launching this standalone app will remove some of the clutter from iTunes and allow people who are looking to download podcasts to have an app designed specifically for that purpose.
