According to a report from Bloomberg BusinessWeek, Apple is trying to end competition from other companies in the tablet market who are aiming for tablets that are smaller than the iPad (such as the Kindle Fire and other tablets that are around 7″ wide in screen size.) BusinessWeek reports that it’s getting its information from two people who wished to remain anonymous, but apparently were in the know about this supposed new tablet.
Of course, we’ve heard rumors about such devices as the “iPad Mini” for several months now. It makes sense that Apple would try and compete with people that are designing smaller and cheaper tablets. Here’s some more information from BusinessWeek:
The new model will have a screen that’s 7 inches to 8 inches diagonally, less than the current 9.7-inch version, said the people, who asked not to be identified because Apple hasn’t made its plans public. The product, which Apple may announce by October, won’t have the high-definition screen featured on the iPad that was released in March, one of the people said.
If this product is actually released, it is likely that competition from Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and other companies will be further squashed. Apple already clearly dominates the tablet market, and this may be just one more move for establish control over the tablet market.
We’ll keep you updated if more information about this is revealed from reliable sources.
