The Surge of Random Apps in the App Store

Recently, I’ve been searching through the pages and pages of Apps that the App Store offers and I’ve noticed something that we’re starting to see more and more of these days. The sheer amount of random “entertainment” Apps.

From “Fat Booth” to “Talking Larry the Bird“, these random Apps have been multiplying like crazy throughout the App community. There are now tens of different versions of “….. Booth” and “Talking….” and I have to wonder, just how did this happen? Why do pointless Apps like these receive so much fandom?

I mean, take a look yourself. Out of the top entertainment Apps, over half of them could be considered “Random” and to an extent- useless. One huge example which caught my eye immediately is the App “Boob Job“- which costs $0.99 and allows you to edit pictures. Or more specifically, the size of well… you know. When I saw this App, my first reaction was to laugh hysterically. After that, I even considered buying it until it suddenly hit me – Why? Why in the world would I need an app that edits the size of breasts in pictures? Sure, I could mess with my friends a bit and have a laugh – what if you use it on a guy lol – but other than that, isn’t there something better to spend that $0.99 on? After that, I continued browsing and found even more useless Apps.

After a while of checking out a few dozen more “Talking……” Apps, I actually began to feel a little insulted. Has the value of humor actually fallen so low that we now think of a high pitched purple baby hippo (Talking Baby Hippo) as entertainment? What happened to actual intelligent humor from human beings? Where did that go?

Another example of a bland pointlessness is iGunPro. The App is extremely simple. All you have to do is tap to shoot. Bang. You tap a few more times. Bang bang bang. Eventually you run out of bullets and you have to tap to reload. Repeat the process a dozen times. Different guns sound differently and some shoot a little faster. Hahaha No. I had this App a while ago but I deleted it pretty quickly. I just couldn’t find the “entertainment” value in it.

Close relatives to the iGunPro type Apps are the Gun Building Apps.  In these Apps, instead of just shooting the guns, you get to build them. Oh yay, I’ve always wanted to learn how to build an AK 47! Seriously though, why are there so many Apps about guns? Are we training a generation of civilian-soldiers or something?

Well in the end, I still haven’t gotten the point of these random Apps, though I suppose I can see how some people might enjoy them. Maybe it’s just me, maybe the rest of the world thinks that this stuff is hilarious. At any rate, these random Apps do sell quite well, which is why developers keep making them. Personally, I’d like to see Apple make a random category and put all of these Apps into it. That way, when I open up entertainment, the first thing I see will no longer be a bloated human face looking through a tiny circular window.

Anyways, I’ll leave the Boob editing, High-pitched talking, Virtual-gun making Apps to others. Instead I’ll be the one in the corner playing Doodle Jump and Virtual Table Tennis.

Peace out.
