iOS Review: WordZinga!
The game that we’re going to introduce today in our review may not be the most popular, but for those of you who are fans of Scrabble, Words with Friends, and other word puzzles, here’s the latest game to add to your collection: WordZinga! The game is based upon a simple concept, of giving you a certain number of spaces, some with a letter already in it. Using your brainpower (or a handy dictionary), you’re going to have to find a suitable word that will fit with the already-provided letters and use up exactly the number of spaces given.
Ratings (Out of 5):
Graphics: 4.0/5
Gameplay: 4.5/5
Game Controls: 3.5/5
Replay Value: 4.5/5
Overall Rating: 4.25/5
Graphics:
The graphics in this game are decent. They’re certainly not world-class, but in no way are they bad either. I would like to see the organization of the screen redesigned, perhaps utilizing landscape mode instead of portrait would be better suited for this type of game. The keyboard takes up a good half of the screen, and excluding that we have the blocks where the letters are placed, as well as a top bar with options for hints and statistics. The backgrounds look nice and fit well with the general theme of the game, but perhaps a more creative font instead of the standard “Arial” would look nicer. (after all, this is a game that’s all about creativity, isn’t it?)
Overall, graphics aren’t bad, but maybe the utilization of landscape mode and some reorganization, as well as reconsidering different fonts to use, would improve the overall look of the game.
Gameplay:
The gameplay certainly is challenging. At some times you may find that there is simply no solution, but the app clearly tells you that there are ____ number of solution available (usually over 20.) OpenFeint incorporation, as well as different levels in the game and a points system make gameplay quite addicting. It really tests just how well you know your vocabulary. Perhaps the implementation of a timer system for more advanced players would make the game even more challenging. Gameplay is very solid.
Game Controls:
This is where WordZinga! falls a bit short. The keyboard in WordZinga! is not the keyboard that comes with the iOS interface; rather, it is one with letters listed from A to Z and does not follow the QWERTY style keyboard layout we have all come to use and love. If the implementation of a QWERTY keyboard were added, instead of simply listing letters from A to Z, the game controls would get a big boost. This is the one part of the game that I found slightly annoying.
Replay Value:
The game overall was quite addicting, with the exception of the bad keyboard controls. I’m pretty sure that this game will be staying on my iPhone for a while yet. It stands solidly as a good word style puzzle game, challenging the mind and enhancing your vocabulary. Replay value gets a solid 4.5/5.
Summing It Up:
Overall, WordZinga! is a great word puzzle game for iOS. With some reorganization of the graphical user interface and an improved keyboard, the game would be even better. The gameplay is addicting and exciting, and overall, this is a game perfect for all those who like mind-stimulating puzzles.
