Here’s a helpful tip from MacWorld that teaches you how to adjust your locked iPhone’s ringer volume. For those of you who aren’t in the know for this, you can’t just adjust the ringer volume by pressing the volume buttons on the side of your iPhone. Instead, you have to actually unlock your iPhone, and if you have a passcode this can be quite annoying. Here’s how to get around that.

The key is with the Emergency Call button, but pressing that puts you one step closer to accidentally dialing the local police station. So, take caution when using this:

Wake up your iPhone—either with the Home button or the Sleep/Wake button. On the Enter Passcode screen, tap the Emergency Call button. Now, instead of dialing the local police, press your volume rockers instead. From that Emergency Call screen, you can adjust the volume of your otherwise-locked iPhone.
