Mac Review: Sapiens (Version 1.2.1)
There are quite a few application application launchers out there for the Mac OS X operating system, and I’ve tried and used many of the popular ones. Apple has even built in a app launcher, which they call SpotLight. But in my opinion, none of these come close to Sapiens, which both looks great on your screen and gets the job done.
The version of Sapiens being reviewed is version 1.2.1.
Ratings (Out of 5):
Graphics: 4.5
Functionality: 5.0
Reuse Value: 4.5
Overall Rating: 4.75/5
Graphics:
The graphics that Sapiens has integrated are stunning. It’s not one of those apps that sit in your menu bar, looking boring. The semi-transparent background, the nice border, and the positioning of the apps all make Sapiens look like something is truly amazing. It positions itself on top of the other elements that are on your screen when it is activated, and doesn’t look out of place at all. The screenshot above shows Sapiens in action. Graphics are a solid 4.5/5.
Functionality:
Sapiens can do no wrong here. The launcher tracks your app launching habits, and over time, predicts which apps you use the most and presents them to you. By simply launching Sapiens and typing, you can search through all of your apps. You can customize some apps to never show, while others to show more often and less often. The app can be launched by moving your mouse in a circle (with sensitivity settings in the preferences) or through a keyboard hotkey. Smooth animation, followed by Sapiens popping up in the middle of your screen, truly makes this app great.
Reuse Value:
We launch different apps every day. Usually, one could put their most commonly used apps in the dock, or use spotlight search. But this is grueling and takes time. Using Sapiens, all these problems are gone. With a quick glance of the 15 or so apps that show up by default, you can find what you’re looking for in less than a second. And if you cant find the app you’re looking for immediately, just start typing. There’s no extra clicking involved. I actually disabled my dock, and fully use Sapiens to navigate through the hundreds of apps that I have on my Mac.
Summing It Up:
Sapiens is, hands down, the best application launcher that is available for Mac, if you’re looking for a launcher that is both fast and intuitive. There is no clicking involved, and Sapiens presents a great interface. The best part about Sapiens is that it can be launched from both the keyboard and the mouse, so there’s no need to switch gears when, let’s say, you’re typing up a report with your keyboard, or browsing the web with your magic mouse. Final rating: 4.75/5
