Jailbreak Tutorial: How to SSH Into Your iDevice on Mac
Note: I do not own this tutorial. This tutorial is published with permission from Josh, a member of the iCauseFX community.
SSH is very useful for playing around in the guts of your iDevice, or simply for installing apps, music, and themes, that are only available online.
SSH stands for Secure SHell. It is just a protocol that allows you to access your iPhone or iPod Touch from your desktop PC or MAC and execute commands on it (thus allowing you to copy any kind of data to and from the iPhone or iPod Touch without iTunes). It’s also used for a lot of customization things if you know what you’re doing.
Open Cydia, Install “SBS Settings”
After SBS Settings is finished installing, install “OpenSSH”
Slide your finger across the top menu bar of your phone/touch, left to right. It may take a few tries to get used to it, but that’s how you access SBS Settings
You should get to a screen like this, make sure the SSH icon is GREEN. Press it if it is red. (If you don’t see the icon, press toggles and turn ON ssh.)
Make sure you have Cyberduck or WInSCP installed on your computer. For this tutorial, I’ll use Cyberduck.
Find your Wifi iP Address in sbs settings (NOTE: YOUR IDEVICE AND YOUR COMPUTER MUST BE CONNECTED TO THE SAME WIFI NETWORK TO USE SSH)
Make sure you are in SFTP mode, enter the Wifi Adress you just got from SBS settings in the server box, for username enter root, and the default password is alpine.
You are now connected to your iDevice. Be Sure to turn off SSH in SBS Settings when not using it.
IMPORTANT NOTE-you MUST change your SSH password, otherwise you phone CAN be hacked.
Open mobile terminal (download from cydia)
Enter su root and press enter
Then put in your current password, alpine
Then enter the command ‘passwd’
Put in alpine again, then your new password twice. Keep your iphone safe!
